A friend of mine once said, "any homily you can summarise as 'be excellent to each other' probably isn't a very good homily". Seems to be an easy litmus test.
At a difficult time in my life when I was trying to understand how to cope, I eventually wound up in a Protestant Church because it was a place where they actually talked about God, not just "be nice".
I see this as a call to the laity. Sadly, priests today are afraid to speak out strongly, for fear that people will turn away from the Church completely. I believe that we, as laity, can more easily speak out and share the Church's teachings with people who know, like, and trust us. Right or wrong, they may be more willing to hear the truth from a friend than a priest standing at the ambo. Do our priests need to be more zealous and courageous? Absolutely! But rather than focusing on what they are NOT doing, let's focus on what we CAN do!
Okay, it lacked a little zeal, other than that Amen and Amen!
