Quick thoughts on same sex marriage decision

So I just returned from a lovely vacation out in Colorado and I left my cell phone in Indiana and didn't get online for two weeks, and it was glorious!

Of course, as I've been away, the SCOTUS came down with it's marriage decision.

A few quick comments:

1) I can't help but chuckle at the comments I've received from some that say "where's your comments about gay marriage - are you sulking and hiding?"

This is so fascinating because these same people say that I talk about same sex marriage and am obsessed with the topic, but they run here and wonder where my comments are when something like this happens?  So would you like me to talk about the topic or not?

2) 150 years ago the Supreme Court said an African American could not be a citizen of the United States.  50 years ago the Supreme Court said a woman has a right to an abortion.  The Supreme Court gets things wrong, and just like Roe. v. Wade, Catholics will continue to work to overturn this terrible piece of jurisprudence.

3) The result certainly doesn't surprise me.  Can anyone produce any substantial evidence of the Catholic Church making a serious effort to explain its teaching to the American people on this topic?  Of course not.

4)  Tolkien is very poignant on this topic: "Actually I am a Christian, and indeed a Roman Catholic, so that I do not expect ‘history’ to be anything but a ‘long defeat’— though it contains some samples or glimpses of final victory."

  1. Big win ! Yep all 50 States ! 21 st country to do so. What a wonderful world ! God is so just . HE always wins in the end and HE proved that HE is with us last Friday and not with you. I've been saying that all along :) That whole little nasty "Mark of the Beast" thing. lol. You're such a silly , silly man. Gave me a chuckle when I saw them waving all over the place in front of the Supreme Court, big HUGE one. Of course , I thought of you. But mostly I thought of how amazingly powerful God is, that HE allowed that day to happen, even with your silly little "Mark of the Beast" idea, and your disgust at "homosexual sex" , LOL, hilarious.

The same sex "marriage" you always spoke of is now, within the law, just MARRIAGE. No quotes :) The Glory is all God's

Don't worry, nothing all that bad will happen. Sky won't fall. God is with us. Oh well, you might have to start paying taxes like the rest of us, but that can only be good for the country. More revenue is always good. Oh and you might be served with lawsuits if you don't follow the law concerning discrimination and MARRIAGE. But we all must follow the law, it's what makes a civilized society.

All those Church "persecution" nightmares you constantly talked about if MARRIAGE includes LGBT people? Well hopefully you obey the LAW of the LAND, because if you don't, your worse nightmares will indeed come true. That's justice for ya :)

Have a lovely day , I know I will, and have consistently had lovely days since last Friday :)

Now on with helping the poor, right FR? Bah bye

    3. The "win" is for Satan, not the people of the US. Father is right in that no one is "out there" teaching Catholics what the Church's view really is.

As usual, most people hate the Church for what THEY THINK its views are, not what they REALLY are.

Oh really? LOL Which Catholics? 62% approve of same sex marriage, and rising. You mean the 30 something % left? You couldn't keep it from happening before the ruling and now you think you can "oveturn" it?

Well alright, if you want to continue your hate mongering and waste your precious life on it, it's a free country.

But you won't get anywhere, except to make an even bigger fool of your self than you already have.

      "Overturn" you say?

No single entity - not the President, Senate, House of Representatives, state Governors, nor anyone else - has the power to overturn a US Supreme Court ruling.

Supreme Court decisions cannot be nullified by other parts of government.

Supreme Court decisions can only be overturned in two lawful ways:

1)The US Supreme Court reverses a decision on an earlier case by making a contradictory decision on a current case.

2)Congress and the States can overturn a decision by amending the Constitution.

The chances of a contradictory decision is slim to none. Considering your type of extreme bigotry is a small minority of the country (and getting smaller each passing year) , including a small minority of Catholics (also getting smaller each passing year) - the chances of amending the Constitution is even slimmer than slim and somewhere in an extreme minus of none.

Marriage includes opposite sex couples and same sex couples now, all in the same LEGAL definition and there is absolutely nothing you can do about that. It part of our American life now and forever.

Maybe when you sleep at night you can dream about overturning it to pacify your bigotry , but in your dreams it shall remain.

    7. "Overturn" - yes - just like we're working for with regard to Roe v. Wade, and just like Dredd Scott was overturned

    9. Dear Anonymous,

After reading your rant, I felt this scripture passage might tickle your conscience. If not now, perhaps sometime in the future. God love you. From, Hoosier Catholic

"3 But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. 2 People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, 4 treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people. 6 They are the kind who worm their way into homes and gain control over gullible women, who are loaded down with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires, 7 always learning but never able to come to a knowledge of the truth." 2 Timothy 3: 1-7

  2. It is a sad time for America and unlike the about comment I do think lots of hatred for christians will be promoted. Much like in the eastern block countries and china. Freedom to worship but no freedom of religion The hatred of christians and any that oppose current fashionable ideas is telling. God is not on the side of hatred. O my Jesus forgive us our sins.

    1. We all need prayers, and if you meant that comment for me, I do care. I also pray for Fr John and others like him. Even though his actions are wrong , I have no ill will toward him or anyone else. I pray for their salvation.

Sad to see them try to make this a western version of the middle east. Sad to see them waste their lives promoting hatred, when this world is so starving for love.

Thank you , and I will pray for you too.

  6. "150 years ago the Supreme Court said an African American could not be a citizen of the United States"

OF COURSE ! Thank you for mentioning it ! If we have 4 bigoted lawyers as part of the Supreme Court in 2015, what would make you think it could have been any better 150 years ago? Bigoted lawyers are sure to make bigoted rulings. I agree ! If Kennedy had been bigoted like you , civil rights for gay people wouldn't have happened. A repeat performance of what happened 15 years ago.

You actually bury yourself and your argument by even saying that and - thank you very much- you make a case for our side instead.

Civil rights for blacks prevailed in the end, and prevailed again on June 26, 2015. Why? Simple, God always is on our side not yours. Love ALWAYS wins with God. Start interpreting those 6 verses in the Bible as God intended, meaning condemnation of lust and rape - not same sex love. Quite a few Christian Churches have come to that reality, so have the majority of Catholics.

If you really want to protect marriage, how about trying to pass a law banning divorce? Or perhaps protest the Catholic Church and it's version of divorce - the vast number of $500 "annulments" that are granted each year? In the United States, 27,000 marriages were annulled in 2006, compared to 338 in 1968. That number is surely much higher in 2014 and this first half of 2105 considering half of all hetero marriages end in divorce. So there ya go....start fighting for marriage if it's supposed to be so important to you . Unless you're a bigot and going after the gays is more fun?

Silly Fr Hollowell, you need to think before you type. Then again, no, please don't think. You keep making it better and better for us every time you write :)
