The Singing Anti-Fracking Nuns

Yowsers!  I found it very interesting that when the producers of the story wanted to convey that these women were sisters, they played Gregorian chant and showed sisters wearing their habits (all very old sisters from days gone by).

Maybe these women are protesting the slaughtering of children through abortion, embryonic stem cell research, etc., the "redefining" of marriage, the loss of religious liberty in our country, etc. in the morning and then in the afternoon they turn their attention to non-intrinsically evil things like an oil pipeline.

  1. I have a relative who is a nun, about their age, and sadly... this doesn't surprise me in the least... :(

  2. The 3 habited nuns shown in the video for two or three seconds are the only ones wearing habits anywhere in the video. They (and for that matter, anyone under 70) appear nowhere on the website -- which is solidly grounded not in the Gospel but in liberal political activism. Very sad.

Watch this bonus video where Mass is celebrated featuring a sister proclaiming the Gospel and giving the homily. Interesting comments about the "hierarchy" (to wild, extended applause) beginning at 19:45. Other curious novelties too...

    1. I was not able to watch the video and am not commenting specifically on the video. But I get irritated when people act like wearing a habit is the sign of a true catholic and those not wearing a habit are somehow not good catholics. Thats just shallow thinking. I have known many sisters who don't where habits AND are fully in line with the magisterium. I also think its great that so many younger sisters want to where a habit. Both are good, they just have different ways of expresses there vocation. Whats wrong with that?

    2. I think the stereotype would quickly dissipate if there were more sisters not wearing habits who were vehemently pro-life and supported the magisterium of the Church.

    3. I think you're viewpoint is wrong, Father. It makes sense that one "not loyal to the magisterium" would probably not where a habit. I'll give you that. But the vast majority are with the magisterium. There is a select few but it is few and being as few as it is, a lack of a habit should not equal disloyalty. In fact, disloyalty has been around since long before the removal of the habit. This idea that a person should be judged based on whether or not they wear a habit is rediculous and is also hurtful to those who ARE loyal.

    4. I can assure you that the vast majority are NOT with the magisterium!

    5. There is a lot of clergy and religious in my family and that has caused me to know many other people in clergy and religious life. I'm not coming from ignorance here. I'm sorry you have such a negative view of religious who don't where habits. I hope that the situation with LCWR isn't the reason for this thinking because those dissident leaders do not represent the minds of most non-habited religious. I'm sorry Father. I think we'll just have to agree to disagree. And I think its very sad.

  3. This isn't JUST liberal political activism. You can make arguments based on Scripture and Tradition for an end to fracking. Protesting fracking does not make them "less-Catholic."

Also, how do you know these nuns aren't vehemently pro-life? I know nuns who are very much against fracking but also march for the unborn and are passionately pro-life. I think some of these comments are unfair.

    1. See the comment above from someone who visited their website. They are of the highly problematic and heretical vein

    2. You comment doesn't make the first part of gbibeau's comment any less true.

    3. Actually, it's a truism. Something that is true but isn't particularly enlightening. So while it is true that it isn't "JUST liberal political activism", that is like saying about a glass of lemonade with a spoonful of raw sewage in it isn't JUST a glass of raw sewage. Liberalism doesn't have coherent principles, just a laundry list of anti-principles, meaning that principles like justice and mercy, right and wrong are reduced to personal whimsy. You can set your watch to it--in a year or two's time the sisters will have mostly forgotten about fracking and will have moved on to whatever their mainstream media masters are gassing about. This worldview of degraded slavery to current events was identified by Benedict the XVI as Regnocentrism and Pope Francis summed up neatly as reducing the Church to an NGO.

I disagree. I think liberals recognize that things are more complicated than what conservatives make them out to be. Liberals recognize things are not black and white.

You're comment does not make it sound like you have had much dialogue with any liberals. It sounds an awful lot like a protestant trying to explain catholicism of which he/she does not understand. If this is your perception of liberalism, than you must be used to listening to yourself talk. Try listening for once.

    5. I have had more than my share of dialogs with liberals. The problem is not that they recognize things are not black and white, it's that there is literally no black and white. It's moral relativism. The other mistake you are making is thinking that I am a conservative. I'm not. Conservatives for me are just the liberals from 10 to 20 years ago. And I do listen. Wake me when a liberal says something that doesn't fall apart on the most cursory of examinations.

  4. Anonymous, the reason I drew attention to it is because in the video THEY use the historic image of sisters religious to represent their order. I have seen this done before by similar groups, so I looked closely at this video, other videos, their website and found no other such image. It is simply a misrepresentation of their order as it is today.

As Father noted, there is an unfortunate stereotype. It is unfair to paint everyone with the same brush but this stereotype does not exist without cause. There is a very direct, observable correlation (not 1.0, but very high) between those orders wearing habits and faithfulness to all the Church teaches, joy and healthy growth.

Exactly. It's the classic "There's no one in here but us chickens" smokescreen.
